    Freaky Tiki has now closed.

Something strange has happened to what was once the Newtown Hotel. The pokies are out, plastic skeletons are in and a newly mixed crowd looks to be having a darn good time. Wandering in without warning, you'd be forgiven for thinking you had landed in Pompeii. There's the distinct atmosphere of vacation, with graffiti on the raw walls and drinks freely flowing.

This is, in fact, the work of Keystone - the group behind the Gazebo and Sugarmill establishments. But where their previous work is all polish, it's the sense of anarchy which makes Freaky Tiki so unique. The strength of this venue is that it's temporary, intended to only open for 6 months, and constructed as such. The decor consists of plastic flowers, brightly coloured Chinese lanterns, green palms and photocopied posters glued to the walls. It's an atmosphere far more reminiscent of a Berlin back alley than a swanky Sydney bar - a little bit cheekier than what we're used to.

Thankfully the prices also reflect this. From 4pm until 7pm daily, happy hour reigns, offering $3.50 drinks and $5 dumpling dishes from the Bamboo Dumpling Bar out the back. If you're feeling a little fancy, themed cocktails and punch bowls, for 2 or 4, are also on offer. When tempted after a couple of tap beers, we went for the Donkey Punch, with gin, white rose tea, and lychees filling in for eyeballs.

Evenings on weekends will be busy, so if you want a table, get in early (and make the most of happy hour). And don't forget, this is for a strictly limited time only - so get your dose of South Pacific while you can.
