Concrete Playground

Glebe has always been a great place to eat, with some of Sydney's favourite cafes and restaurants (in which I spent far too many hours with friends after lectures instead of studying). Now it's becoming an attractive drinking destination too. With new bars Timbah, Bedlam and Tommy's Beer Cafe opening in the last year or two, the addition of Mr Falcon's is helping to make Glebe a nighttime destination in its own right.

This is especially true for Mr Falcon's, since it's the kind of place you could easily spend the whole night in. This large venue is like a big old house, with separate nooks and rooms for an intimate drink, and the most comfortable chairs I've ever sipped a martini in. It was a quiet Thursday when we visited, with a trio of guitar players upstairs and the staff super quick to fetch drinks. To start, the Classic Martini was good ($18) but the Tom Collins was a little disappointing, served looking a little tired and tasting just okay.

The small bowl of Olives ($5) were another one to avoid, more like the kind you'd expect on top of a Domino's pizza. The Cheese Plate was a much better option. You pay by the cheese, which is then served up with fig roulade and fruit. We took it to the beer garden, which looked very pretty lit up with fairy lights, and ate it with a well-priced carafe of Sangria ($8) and a glass of delicious Spanish red ($9).

The best part of Mr Falcon's is undoubtedly the atmosphere. This venue is so relaxing you feel as if you could almost curl up and have a nap on one of the couches. It's a great mid-week or Sunday night option to chew the fat with friends. A few more bar snacks, and better (or cheaper) cocktails and Mr Falcon's has the potential to earn a very loyal, regular crowd.
