121BC is the bar attached to the eponymously-named boutique bottle shop in the wilds of Surry Hills. With a focus on regional Italian flavours, 121BC's wine list changes monthly, and is complemented by the menu of fresh, seasonal food which is uniformly delicious. The folks behind 121BC are also particularly concerned with 'biodynamic', natural wines, the kind that are preservative-free and linger on the tongue. If you have trouble picking precisely what it is you want to drink from the prolific wine list, the staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and happy to help you out and explain the ins and outs of your drink like an over-zealous chemistry teacher. And to make things better, 121BC is generally great value for money, with most glasses coming in around the $8 mark.
The long bar around which stools are clustered makes the most of the slick, narrow inner-city space, seating about twenty five people in the sultry, intimate room. The seating arrangement means 121BC works best if there's just the two of you, as you'll be seated beside one another at optimum footsy-playing distance. There's been a lot of press about 121BC of late, and as is the way of all things which attract hype, it causes the crowds to thicken and decreases your chance of finding a seat at 8 o'clock on a Friday night. But if you get there earlier, or make the effort to go mid-week you'll get the best experience out of one of Sydney's most exciting wine bars.
