The Hazy Rose is everything we wish East Village's pop up, Former Glory, had been. Wooden benches, red curtains, art deco Diana lamps and hooks for your coat, this bar has all the markings of a revived Darlinghurst glory era. Not only that, but the faces behind the bar are friendly - not something we see as much as we'd like. This is clearly a project with heart.
It may be 7 on a Tuesday eve but, by the time we arrive, seats are already scarce. Determined to work our way through as much of the cocktail list as humanly possible, we pull up a stool at the bench by the stairs and start ordering. It's not long at all before we find ourselves tapping our feet to Tequila and sipping drinks. Mark my words, these are the kind of speakeasy concoctions that you want to slip slowly. As the night progresses, we start to wish we'd begun with the special - a Pork Pie and house beer for a mere $10.
There's nothing regrettable about the drinks themselves, though. The Fernet Julep ($15) is an unusual take on this classic, with Fernet Branca replacing the usual sticky syrup. The Whisky Sour ($15-$25) is closer to what you'd expect, with your choice of whisky served over a block of ice. If you're feeling brave, opt for the Hamish ($18): a mix of Espolon Reposada, Taliskee, sweet vermouth and bitters. My favourite of the night, this had a wonderful smoky aftertaste. A good choice if you're after something a little more gentle is the Stanley Sidecar ($16), which treats you to the house's own apricot brandy along with Cointreau and fresh lemon juice.
Before we can top our evening off with a Cheeseboard and two glasses of Sticky ($30), the music has moved to Crystal and the bar is pulsing. We decide that balancing a cheeseboard might just be stretching our luck, and leave vowing to return within the week.
My advice? Nab a spot here quick. We suspect that soon getting through the door will be more difficult than at Shady Pines.
