Recently joining Victoria Street’s busy bar and restaurant strip, Jekyll and Hyde is a stylish café/tapas bar with a split personality. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Curious Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this bar has a sweet side by day and is a little more devilish at night.
During the day, take a break from the bustle and enjoy brunch or lunch accompanied by Single Origin coffee in the cosy and quiet courtyard out the back. At night, enter a dimly lit wine and tapas bar; replete with dark wood and leather finishes and an intimate ambiance. Tapas dishes can be individually chosen, or else platters for two are available, grouped loosely by geographical inspiration (French, Spanish, Italian or Asian).
While most of the food is good, some is excellent. The salt and pepper calamari are just-cooked, tender chunks of scored, batterless calamari, freshened with lime. The pan-fried chorizo is delightful, served with a rich sauce of cooked cherry tomatoes, perfectly balanced with the fresh bite of apple cider and crunchy julienned apples (the accompanying bread is sadly a stale disappointment, though). Similarly delicious are crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside arancini balls – a perfect winter night’s moreish treat.
There is a wide range of wines on offer from around the world as well as original cocktails, divided between ‘Jekyll’s Prescriptions’ and ‘Hyde’s Potions’. In general, cocktails are skilfully mixed and delicious, though the original concoctions tend towards the sweet.
Perhaps the best feature of this sexy newcomer is the warm and attentive service you can expect. Altogether, Jekyll & Hyde is a sleek and sophisticated wine bar, ideal for a date or a drink with fabulous friends.
