For those who associate small bars with pretension, exorbitant prices and loud music, there is a haven: Bar-Racuda. This recent addition to Enmore Road’s growing bar scene is set in a low-lit, petite room with jazzy numbers sifting through at a level where conversation is still possible.
Bar-Racuda is a true small bar, as it comfortably fits 25-30 people and an excess of this would be a tight squeeze. On Friday nights the bar fills up quickly, so it’s best to arrive near the 6 o’clock mark in order to snag one of the high wooden tables.
There is a selection of Italian and WA wines and a cocktail list with the familiar regulars and a few creative concoctions, such as the Orange & Marmalade Bramble ($14). For $20, 2-3 people can share a ‘Racuda Shaker’, a large Margarita, Pimms no. 1 or Cosmopolitan served in a finely decorated pitcher.
The food menu is limited, however, it should be overlooked for the complimentary aperitivo offered daily from 6pm-8pm. In true Italian style, the bar’s resident chef, Mr Mario, serves an array of antipasto dishes which he cooks in plain view behind the bar. The dishes, which change each night, may include cured meats, marinated vegetables, fresh salads, frittatas and toasted bread.
The bar lacks signage, but is recognisable with deep purple curtains tied back at the front window. Directly opposite the Enmore Theatre, it’s likely to attract concert-goers for a glass of shiraz ($8) or a Leffe beer ($8) before the show.
