Located at the intersection of South Dowling and Flinders Streets in Darlinghurst, the Local Taphouse can go slightly unnoticed. If you’re not an inner-city dweller, nor a beer fanatic, it’s unlikely you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the Local - one of the Sydney bar scene’s best-kept secrets.

Opening in late 2008, this beer haven is the brainchild of Steve Jeffares and Guy Greenstone, two beer enthusiasts who conceived the inspired idea of opening a taphouse for all those budding beer buffs.

Providing more than twenty beers on tap, and an extensive range of bottled ales, stouts, pilsners and ciders of local and international origin, it’s hard to be decisive. For the adventurist, we suggest the Meantime English IPA ($35 /750 ml) to share. With strong spice and citrus tang, it’s a sure cure for any winter ails.  A more conventional option is the Timothy Taylor Landlord Pale Ale ($15/500ml), which is heavier and drier in character. For those looking for a distinct taste in their barley pop, leave it up to the more than capable staff, all of who share their owners’ enthusiasm.

They also offer beer pairings for their exceptional food options, most of which incorporate beer in the cooking process. We suggest starting with the Grilled Spanish Chorizo ($11) or the Smoked Ale Meatballs ($13) to nibble on. If you’re after something more substantial, we recommend the Free-range Dark Ale Braised Pork Shoulder ($28) or the Golden-ale infused Sous-vide Lamb Rump ($29), both of which are perfect winter warmers.

With 1920s inspired décor and eclectic detailing from bar to bathroom, the Taphouse is anyone’s wonderland. Find a nook on one of the many levels, or head to the rooftop terrace – perfect for a summer afternoon drink with friends.
