One would expect a champagne bar to be luxurious. Everything about Woollahra's newest kid on the block is just that. One Moncur caters to a range of tastes and budgets and adds a warm buzz to the inner east's drinking and dining scene. Set within a sultry art deco-style interior (formerly the Phoenix Hotel), guests are welcomed to try one of the many boutique French champagnes on offer or alternative tipple of choice from the considered wine list. Add to this a fine selection of antipasto plates, oysters and cheese and you're in indulgent business.
Co-owners Luke Browne and Anthony Rosen are driven by a passion for champagne and with the help of sommelier, Tristan Tomlinson (ex Manta), have handed down a sterling menu featuring many a class act. The Ruinart Blanc de Blanc, Reims France ($169 bottle) is a safe bet as is the Bollinger Special Cuvee, Ay-Champagne France ($148 bottle). For seasoned champagne drinkers the Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blanc ($143 bottle) or a 2003 Dom Perignon ($395 bottle) might satisfy the thirst. Much of the champagne menu comes in at under $20 for a glass and under $200 for a bottle, the boys' way of classifying champagne as an affordable luxury.
One Moncur's food offerings celebrate local produce and comprise a selection of share plates, oysters, breads, tartines, cheese and handmade chocolate. The wagyu pastrami and gruyere tartine ($16) made fresh to order is a bud-awakening starter as are a couple of freshly shucked Sydney Rock oysters ($3.50 each). Contributing to the trending hum of Woollahra's leafy surrounds, One Moncur is a pleasant reminder of just how much we all love bubbles.
