Over the past dozen years, acclaimed Australian photographer Polixeni Papapetrou has been capturing her heroically-named children Olympia and Solomon and their friends. With names like that her complexly composed images seem manifest destiny. As an artist, Papapetrou credits her offspring and their friends as collaborators and while the elements of make-believe, costume and narrative bear the hallmark of the children, there's nothing childish about the way Papapetrou executes her resolved images. As photographer, Papapetrou is not merely witness or documenter but architect and conductor. And, all achieved while making it look like the kids just got loose in the dress-up box.
Following her success China, France, Greece, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Slovakia and USA, the Australian Centre for Photography presents Takes From Elsewhere, the first significant retrospective of Papapetrou's compelling work.
