To morph is to be transformed; to distort, to twist out of shape. Tanya Linney's delicate and elegant artworks made by a variety of techniques, from drawing and collage to dying and sculpture pose the question: why do we need (and want) the media in our lives?
She has identified four major genres of our contemporary society's media dialogue fashion, film, photography and advertising and seeks to pull apart and distort the frameworks that bind us, presenting something funny in return, so that we may see them more clearly. Linney says it's "humour in art that I love. It becomes a forum for me to question ideals … to augment reality; to not always oppose, but to always question".
But humour is not the only trick in Linney's hand, there's also a sense of wistful sentimentality perhaps through the contrast of considering the media paradigm, which is arguably moving away from conventional modes of communication, in such traditional forms of art-making.
Meet the artist, at Global Gallery: Saturday 6 November, 2 - 4 pm
