On a rainy night, I found myself at what is sure to be many people’s favourite local. This is the newest venture of chef Warren Turnbull, and a more casual setting than his other Surry Hills establishment, Assiette. I was keen to eat here because of their dedication to sourcing local, sustainable produce. The food certainly doesn’t let you down. What they do with this produce is simple, yet stunning.
The menu is designed to share, which is a good thing for people like me who can never decide and want it all. The Beef Chimichangas ($10) are a must and the Crispy Quail Eggs ($14) are the best beer snack I’ve ever had. There are so many great dishes that you will find your own favourite, but make sure you don’t miss out on the exquisite Kingfish ($19). All the dishes are just scrumptious. I found the smaller dishes to be more flavoursome, but all are far better than anything else this close to Central Station. This place is the real ‘hidden gem’ of the neighbourhood.
While the food probably prices itself out of the everyday meal category, it will most certainly make a great night out. The service is dedicated and warm, a reflection of the food and atmosphere. District Dining is a true ‘Modern Australian’ restaurant. This is the future of eating in Sydney: fresh, flavoursome and sustainably minded food that has you loosening your belt and wanting more and more.
