Concrete Playground

While the Chinatown branch of Ramen Kan is great for late night eats, it's the street-level Bondi Junction version that I prefer. Both restaurants have a sleek, contemporary Japanese feel, and the ramen dishes are equally delicious. But the wider menu choice - and particularly the unusual entrees - offered at Bondi are the real treats of Ramen Kan.

I'm talking about Kushi Broccoli or Eggplant ($6.90 each), where your choice is deep fried and served with ponzu sauce, Japanese mayonnaise and a dab of mustard on the side. Teriyaki Tofu with Miso Soup ($8.50) is a great, hearty warmer. And of course there's Japanese dumplings, Gyoza (5 for $5.90), which are available in pork, prawn or vegetarian. Small bowls of Ramen and Udon ($5.90) are also available, so you can go hard on the entrees without missing out on the flavours of the main course.

The signature dishes are, of course, the ramen. For the uninitiated, I'd suggest the classic Tonkotsu Ramen ($10.90). Another good option is the Yaki Soba ($8.50), a fried noodle dish with loads of fresh veges. For those who are game to tackle a box, dinner boxes ($15.90) are also available with your pick of most of the inclusions.

While staff might be a little distant (and very busy), this place is usually full for good reason. For well-priced, authentic and ultra-tasty Japanese food, it's hard to find a better option in Sydney. Ramen Kan is worth heading into the chaos of the Junction for.
