Zushi is no secret. It has won several voters' choice awards and has a permanent line of sashimi searchers outside its door. Late last year a Crown Street restaurant was added to the Victoria Street original. The new haunt is larger in size and menu than its forebear and has recently introduced daily dinner specials.
Monday brings you tender salty sweet barbeque skewers of beef, prawn or chook. Tuesday it is their signature rolls at a fraction of their original cost, a mere $10 for a giant 8-piece roll. Innovative innards include gyoza dumplings, lobster and eel.
Do not be turned off by the ‘Wasabi Wednesday’ title. They are not offering mounds of fluorescent nose clearing paste from a tube. This is fresh wasabi, a lot more modest in both colour and heat. Its earthy beige green hue doesn’t overwhelm the generous slabs of super fresh sashimi it is served with. Carnivores can also opt for it with wagyu steak.
Thursday finds steak paired with a sweet fruity sauce of nashi pear and apple. The unexpected fruit salad combination is rich and hoi-sin like. At the end of the working week it’s oysters on the menu. Fresh, deep-fried or slammed down with a shot of sake, the choice is yours.
Chunks of the monstrous Alaskan King Crab is deep fried with light tempura batter for the Saturday night treat. The giant claws were made to be grasped by hungry hands keen to bite into the sweet meat. They also come steamed with ginger and mirin for the health conscious.
As the reality of Saturday night’s escapades sink in and the alarm clock of Monday morning approaches comfort yourself with Sunday’s seafood hot pot. Gently cooked calamari, mussels, fish and prawns sit in a warming broth.
The daily dishes live up to their description, especially with one of Zushi’s Asian-inspired cocktails in hand, you will feel oh-so-special.
