Let’s face it, if you’re running a cafe on the forth floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art with harbour views, you could pretty much serve up a bowl of cornflakes and business would still be booming. The view over Circular Quay really is something, even on a rainy day. Thankfully, the chaps from Fresh Catering running the joint are not using the view as an excuse to serve up nonsense.
The cafe has a slight air of school canteen about it, with plastic chairs, packed in tables and a queue to order your food. That’s as far as the similarity goes though. The food is much better than canteen fare, with a solid, reasonably priced selection of shared plates on wooden boards along with burgers and salads. The White Anchovy Bruschetta with Salsa Verde ($10) is fresh and zingy, while the Chicken Liver Pâté ($10) is slightly too boozy for a Sunday brunch. We tried two of the burgers: the Chicken Katsu Burger, a bargain at $12, and the Wagyu Beef Burger ($18) which, with Gruyere and beetroot, is thoroughly satisfying.
If looking at art with hundreds of other people sends you into the kind of thirsty panic that I experience, then the cafe offers some welcome respite – from the art that is, not the crowds. The highlight of the morning was seeing the set-up for the Dachshund U.N. ready with umbrellas for the incoming dogs. No doubt the MCA has a few more tricks up its sleeve.
