This unique establishment in the Darlington area is exactly what its name implies - a place to park your bike and have a coffee.

Centrally located on Abercrombie St, five minutes from Redfern train station, the café is the love child of two Australian owners who used to live in Amsterdam. Drawing inspiration from the Dutch city, they returned to Sydney and saw the potential in converting an old butcher's shop into a cafe and bicycle repair shop.

Dusting down the space to expose the old butcher tiles, complete with pokey farm animal murals, Nathanial (the mechanic) and his bike garage are clearly visible behind the coffee counter.

In one corner of the cafe there are retro bikes for sale, and in the other, a gleaming coffee machine manned by one of the friendly staff.

The coffee is good, the vibe is mellow and the menu is short and unfussy, featuring a traditional Dutch style breakfast. Choose from sourdough bread with salmon and spinach, or, for the vegetarians, muesli and yoghurt and a selection of tasty pastries are on offer. But get there early as the jam donuts do sell fast. Alternatively there is tuna salad and a selection of vegan pies catered by Funky Pies in Bondi.

As popularity increases plans are already underway to open the Redfern Bike Depot to encourage locals to bring their pushies down and get a lil’ greasy. For those of us who are not mechanically minded the pitstop still invites a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

Trendy without the pretense, and with free Wi-Fi, it's a great place to perch in the bar window with a newspaper and coffee to watch the day drift on by.
