If a sandwich was a little hungover, went to bed and accidentally left the heater on, he would emerge a crisp, slightly greasy jaffle oozing stringy cheese. Jaffles are the food of our childhood, the snack of choice on rainy afternoons and the perfect companion whilst watching the Brady Bunch (quite possibly just me).
Jafe Jaffles is Sydney's latest food truck, the brainchild of three guys: Luke (van owner and founder), Hedge (concept pioneer) and Marc (menu boss). The van is different from Eat Art Truck or any of the other chic cafes that populate Sydney. The bright yellow kombi van, with a good looking curly-haired surfer type out front selling David JaffleHoffs reminds us of iconic scenes from Australia's Puberty Blues.
For $6 you can get a David JaffleHoff, which is packed with home-made spag bowl and cheese, or a Jean Claude van Ham, with leg ham, cheese and tomato. They're both standouts; the cheese in the Hoff is particularly noteworthy, subtle yet perfectly gooey. The Caramelo Banana with, you guessed it, caramel, banana and hazelnuts on brioche, topped with ice cream would be a quiet knife between the ribs to a case of the munchies. If your stomach is not quite done, fill her up with a big old milkshake.
The flavours offered by Jafe Jaffles are tasty, but we want more please. A pickle in the Jean Claude perhaps? Nonetheless, at $6 a pop, these smokin' jaffles are a damn good lunch on the go option and they hit the spot in a way a watercress and avocado salad never could.
Jafe Jaffles are regulars at Bondi Farmers' Markets on weekends, and can be seen roving around sporadically during the week. To find the van's immediate and upcoming locations visit their facebook page or follow @jafejafflekombi on twitter. Jafe Jaffles also cater and can be booked for private functions. Happy jaffling!
